Reader Feedback: Open Letter to the Sri Lankan Resort Offering a 14K Dessert

Reader Comment

I absolutely agree with you that this dessert offering is excessive!

It's up to those of us who espouse responsible travel to rattle the cage those in the industry who have a mindset focused on experiences at the expense of a balance to the need to give back to communities we visit.
Thanks fo reminding me.

My first response to the story about “The Fortress Stilt Fishman Indulgence”, a gold leaf Italian Cassata, including an 80 carat aquamarine stone and priced at $14,500, was amazement followed by indignation.

In a world where global warming, escalating prices for essential commodities and a dangerously increasing gap between rich and poor, your dessert promotion seems pretentious at best.

Here’s an idea.

How about offering this amazing dessert to a customer who donates the cost of the dessert to a worthwhile environmental projects in Sri Lanka?

If you take up my offer, I’ll give you credit on our website. My guess is that you’ll get some very good press elsewhere, positive public relations and applause from your local community.

Hoping you take up my offer!
