A Jaw Dropping Headine

Bananas are Dying

This piece of news from JOHANN HARI, a columnist for The Independent newspaper shocked me.

How could bananas be dying? The comfort food of my child hood – peanut butter and banana sandwiches, the creamy banana puddings my Aunt Lucy was famous for and my daily banana topping off oatmeal is going away?

According to Johann, more bananas are consumed worldwide than rice or potatoes. And now the banana has a fungus called Panama Disease, with the potential of leaving everyone’s favorite fruit inedible.

Apparently, bananas are a victim of standardization and corporate greed. Unlike its sturdier ancestors, the fruit we have come to know and love could become history in our lifetimes because there is no cure for the fungus.

Here’s a kicker. I wonder if I would be as concerned if I learned that brussel sprouts were on a death watch.

Either way, this is another wake up call for taking a stand against genetically engineered food.
